Benefits of synergical treatment with deep local hypertemia
Highest mortality rate among all other cancers with a 20 % one–year survival for patients. The Whipple procedure ( duodenopancreatectomy) con increase survival in patients with resectable pancreatic cancer which are less than 20 % at diagnostic time due to delay in diagnosis. Chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy are the available therapeutic options for patients today though have shown very limited tumor control rates and pancreatic cancer continues to be refractory to treatment which results in poor survival and outcome for patients, specially those with advanced stages ( which are nearly 80%).
The main reason of this low respons rates is that Pancreatic cancer has a very dens stroma that is highly immunosuppressive and unrichable by systemic treatments like chemotherapy. That special tumoral tissue microenvironment makes immunotherapy less effective and chemotherapy difficult acces to tumoral cells living in this dens stroma.
In recent years, there has been an important research effort trying to find strategies that improve tumor response to treatment acting over the dens tumoral stroma, disrupting it and enhancing arrival of treatments to tumoral cells. One of the most studied options and one that shows better results in research studies (both in vitro and in vivo), is deep regional hyperthermia. Deep regional hyperthermia targets both the tumoral cells and the stroma making the tumor more responsive: favors disruption of this dense and compact microenvironment enabling chemotherapy to get into the stroma and destroy tumor, meanwhile, makes the environment more immunoresponsive. Hyperthermia has the advantage that it is a non-pharmacological, non-invasive, and non-toxic treatment, easily combining with other strategies ( chemo /radio/immunotherapies) it without increasing side effects while enhancing overall survival anfdoutcome..
