FUS-HIFU ULTRASOUND TUMOR ABLATIONS OF MALIGNANT AND BENIGN TUMORS
Tumor ablation by high intensity focused ultrasound (FUS-HIFU) is a non-invasive technique that allows to destroy both primary and metastatic tumor lesions in certain tissues by means of an ultrasound beam guided and controlled by ultrasound image. With this technique we can perform a worldwide pioneer adjuvant treatment in patients who are not candidates for conventional surgery because of the location of the tumor or because of its clinical conditions. The main advantage of this procedure is the excellent tolerance and low risk of complications compared with conventional surgery, allowing rapid recovery of the patient. It is an especially useful procedure to treat pancreatic tumors (although also hepatic, renal and sod other soft tissues), with which we have obtained excellent clinical results in combination with chemotherapy. Ultrasound ablations have been and are also being a revolution in the treatment of certain benign tumors such as mammary fibroadenomas, uterine myomas or benign thyroid nodules, cases in which given the benignity of the lesions, reduced surgical and postsurgical complications as well as the absence of scars are the main advantage of this procedure compared to conventional surgery. Dr.Vidal-Jové is one of the world experts in the application of these procedures in the field of oncology and has published scientific articles where the hopeful results obtained with this technique are exposed. We use the facilities of the Mutua-Terrassa University Hospital to perform FUS-HIFU ultrasound ablations.
